I am not a mother (yet!), but I have watched my sister raise her 2 children on her own and also have many friends who happen to be single mothers. Finances are tight for families everywhere and ways to stretch your dollar are especially useful for those single parent (yes, single dads can apply these tips too!) households out there.
Below you will find 7 Frugal tips for Single Parents (or anyone really) that will help you save money!
1.) Don't throw away leftovers!
When you make a meal there is bound to be leftovers! Save your left overs for lunch the next day to save a little extra money. I use the extra bits of veggies that I cut up for dinner and freeze them. I use them later for stews and soups or even salsa.
2.) Enjoy cheap, easy meals with the kids.
With simple inexpensive ingredients you can make wonderful meals for you and your children. You can find meals that are not only inexpensive but kid friendly to enjoy time together. Utilize coupons and store sales to find the best deals on foods for your meals. Check out these 4 Frugal Meat Recipes to get you started.

The mosquitoes are already flying rampant around here in SW Florida where I live! Bug spray and citronella candles can become quite expensive when you have the kind of mosquito problems like we do around here. I swear that the mosquitoes around here are from another planet – no lie! These mosquitoes, they leave bruises! I like to camp, and I love being outdoors, and I can go through bug spray like it's nobodies business.. There is a more frugal way to go about this – DIY Homemade Bug Spray!
The first ingredient you will need to create your own bug spray is essential oils. You can choose from Citronella, Clove, Mint, Lavender, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus Lemongrass, Rosemary, and many others.
You will also need Natural Witch Hazel and Distilled or boiled Water as well to make your own mosquito repellent/bug spray.
So the 3 main ingredients needed are:
- Essential Oils
- Witch Hazel
- Distilled or Boiled Water
How to Make Homemade Bug Spray:
- Fill spray bottle about half full with distilled or boiled water. I boil my water as it's cheaper then buying the distilled.
- Add the natural witch hazel to fill the spray bottle almost to the top
- Add drops of essential oils to desired scent. I typically use about 40 drops of oil, the more the stronger the scent. My foils to mix are: Citronella, clove, lavender, eucalyptus and a little mint.
That's it! You're done. This recipe for homemade bug spray is very easy to do (just 3 ingredients and 3 steps!) and a cheaper alternative to the store bought stuff. Try it out next time you need a little bug spray to keep those mutants mosquitoes off you!
