A reader, Michelle, emailed me yesterday with a simple but really good question. Michelle asks:
Hi there my name is Michelle and I am relatively new to your blog and coupons all together. I have a question that may be silly but do you know if you can use coupons with food stamp (snap) ebt cards? I am on the Snap Program here in Georgia right now and I would love to follow your deals and tips but hate to look stupid at the register. Thanks!

The simple answer? Yes! You absotively (yes, I know this is not really a word but who cares?! ) can take coupons with you shopping when you are on the Food Stamp Program! However, you should know that the store must charge sales tax on the value of the coupons. What happens when you use your coupon and then it's redeemed by the store to the manufacturer – the manufacturer in turn pays that portion of your bill and you are always responsible for the tax. Store coupons are considered discounts as the store is offering the savings not the products manufacturer.
In summary? Take some spare change with you if you're going grocery shopping with coupons and Food Stamps to cover the tax on your purchases with coupons.
Those that are interested in how they can help families that are currently using food stamps may be interested in online social work degree programs.
So Michelle, I hope this covers your question with a little added food for thought! If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me in the comments below or use my contact page. I will answer your questions here on my blog!
